Maintenance Notes

Pruning group 2 - repeat bloomer, prune immediately after flowering
Bloom time - May/June and September

Clematis are placed into pruning groups (1, 2, or 3) based on bloom time, time of reblooming, and old wood/new wood blooming requirement. Most of the large-flowered clematis belong in pruning group 2 and flower in the spring on shoots from old wood and in the fall on new wood. Suggested pruning strategy is to cut back to 20 inches year 1, cut back to 30 inches year 2, and then prune to shape in the following years. Heavy pruning of mature plants may result in decreased blooming. Disease shouldn't be a problem. If you do have disease problems you can prune the plant to the ground and start over. If the roots survive the plant will come back.
